Building a Career in the Credit Market (FLT-CCM)

Description

The Building a Career in the Credit Market session is a conversation between Sabrina Fox and Labib Choudhury, a Director in the leveraged finance team at Rabobank, on how a credit career is actually built. It's designed for professionals early in their careers and for anyone considering a move into credit from another asset class or another part of the bank.

The conversation traces the path from university into the market, covering how a rotational program helped clarify what the work involves, why credit offers a different balance of quantitative analysis and commercial judgment than equity, and why the degree you studied matters less than most students assume. It then moves into the day-to-day reality of the role, and how responsibilities shift from building models and spreading comps at the junior level to ideating transactions and negotiating terms as you become more senior.

A substantial part of the discussion addresses the gap between financial training and legal training. Most banks invest heavily in modeling and comparatively little in documentation, yet the constraint on a transaction is often the covenant package rather than the numbers. The session covers how to close that gap, including practical habits like keeping a covenant notebook, rebuilding old models from first principles, sitting in on legal calls to learn the language, and translating each clause into the number it controls.
The conversation also covers staying current as terms change, building a network you can call on, finding mentors, and what junior professionals should be doing now to stand out as the market changes around them.
